Gon – từ nhỏ đến lớn chưa bao giờ được gặp mặt cha – tham gia vào cuộc thi lấy chứng chỉ Hunter, một cuộc thi rất khắc nghiệt nhằm chọn ra những thành viên ưu tú cho đội ngũ “Hunters”. Cha của Gon là một Hunter huyền thoại và cậu ấy muốn tìm ra cha mình nên đã chọn con đường theo nghiệp Hunter. Gon gặp Killua trong vòng kiểm tra đầu tiên. Killua đến từ một dòng họ nổi tiếng trong việc hành nghề ám sát: ZhaoldYeck. Killua đã được huấn luyện từ nhỏ để trở thành sát thủ, và cậu ấy có tài năng thiên bẩm trong việc đó. Bạn đồng hành của họ là Leorio và Kurapika.

Những diễn biến lúc đầu có vẻ rất chậm rãi, nhưng dần dà về sau, cốt truyện trở nên lôi cuốn hơn khi tác giả dẫn dắt họ vào thế giới Hunters-một thế giới tăm tối, đầy cạm bẫy. HxH xây dựng một thế giới nhân vật muôn màu muôn vẻ, đểu cán, đê tiện, tốt bụng, thâm độc … Những nhân vật chính của chúng ta cứ dần dần trưởng thành và mạnh lên, quá trình phát triển của nhân vật cứ tiến từ từ theo diễn biến cổt truyện. Và, cái hấp dẫn của bộ manga này chính là những cảnh chiến đấu, nó không giống với cảnh đánh nhau thông thường như các bộ Shounen Manga khác. Không phải những cuộc đánh nhau đơn thuần mà là những đòn cân não thực sự đối với người đọc, nó sẽ khá phức tạp cho những người chỉ đọc lướt qua, nhưng nó sẽ trở thành đoạn hay nhất của cuốn truyện nếu mọi người đọc kĩ.
